    Application

Stearic acid 50, vegetable is produced by saponification of vegetable oils. During the manufacturing process, the stearic acid is worked up in appropriate separation processes, such as hydrolysis and subsequent distillation, to produce a usable product. This is the unsaturated C-18 cut, which is subsequently used in many cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications (skin and body care, e.g. shaving foam). Stearic acid is also used as a base for candles, which burn in a CO2-neutral manner, in contrast to the kerosene normally used. In technical chemistry, stearic acid is used as an additive to rubber compounds or in other plastics.

    Precautions

Wash hands and other exposed body parts with mild soap and water before eating, drinking or smoking and when leaving the workplace.  Provide process area with good ventilation to prevent formation of vapors.

    Further information

Stearic acid is an acid, albeit a very weak one. Nevertheless, stearic acid has a corrosive effect on metals. The name stear is Greek and means tallow or lard. It indicates the origin from which stearic acid was and still is obtained in the past. However, the industrial extraction of stearic acid from vegetable oils is much more effective, as these can contain up to 70% C-18.

    Storage

Store only in the original container in a cool, well-ventilated area. Keep container closed when not in use. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight.

    CAS-Nummer: 57-11-4
Synonym: n-octadecanoic acid, tallow acid, lactaric acid

Keine Kennzeichnung erforderlich.
